St. Joseph Catholic Church originated in 1881, when a wooden building was constructed where the modern church now stands. Then a part of St. Paul Church in San Pablo, it became a mission of St. Patrick Church in Rodeo in 1923. Finally, in 1947, it became fully independent. Today, it is part of the Oakland Diocese. The parish also includes a school for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, at 1961 Plum Street.
This is a Buddhist temple of the Nichiren Shoshu tradition. The temple keeps a daily morning and evening schedule for temple and holds many ceremonies throughout the year. It leads pilgrimages to the Head Temple of Nichiren Shoshu at Japan's Mt. Fuji.
Worship is based on the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin, born the son of a Japanese fishermen nearly 800 years ago. Daishonin became a Buddhist priest at 16 years old.
The temple welcomes visits from the public every day and encourages people to call or send an email if they have questions or would like to arrange an introductory meeting.
Not visible from the street, the temple is located behind the Bay Park Retirement Residence on Appian Way. There is a parking lot behind the retirement residence.
In addition to its Sunday service and Wednesday Bible class, this church offers Bible study for children that is designed to teach a basic understanding of the Bible in three years.
Administered by Pastor John Wright, the church describes itself as a "community embracing contemporary and traditional styles to provide a friendly and impactful service" to members and visitors. It offers "local and global outreach opportunities" as well as services for children and adults. In addition to regular Sunday services, the church sponsors meetings of small groups in homes around the community.
