As the laboratory for The Alabama Rural Spectacle Project, which is administered through volunteers from the UAB School of Optometry, weve had the opportunity to help the rural poor and the homeless in our area. On one occasion, we made a pair of glasses for a young man in his twenties who had never worn corrective lenses and had been homeless since he was a teenager. He was moved to tears when he received the glasses and told the doctors and opticians he had never been able to see so clearly. He later reported to the administrators that our efforts had changed his life, as he was able to get a job and change the way he had been forced to live.
