Founded in 1982 as a joint project of the Sisters of Mercy and the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Marian House was initially established in response to the circumstances of women at the Baltimore City Womens Detention Center. Two sisters and a laywoman who served as volunteers at the Detention Center saw women who had been released from jail returning again and again. They found that even when inmates desperately wanted to rebuild their lives, they usually left the jail without housing, employment or support. About the Sponsoring Communities The School Sisters of Notre Dame was founded in 1833 in Germany by Caroline Gerhardinger, who believed that the renewal of society depended on the family and that mothers were the first educators. To that end, the School Sisters of Notre Dame chose as their mission the education of girls. Their ministry is directed toward education, which means enabling persons to reach the fullness of their potential as individuals. Their teaching extends beyond the classroom and into the lives of the people they serve-especially women, children, and persons who are poor. The Sisters of Mercy was founded in 1831 by laywoman Catherine McAuley in Dublin, Ireland who established the first House of Mercy to care for "distressed women of good character." The Sisters of Mercy are women who commit their lives to serving Gods people, especially those who are sick, poor and uneducated. In the spirit of the Gospel, their mission is to help people to overcome the obstacles that keep them from living full and dignified lives. Both the Sisters of Mercy and the School Sisters of Notre Dame elect two members each to serve as a Corporate Board. The Corporate Members meet annually to provide oversight relevant to the mission direction of the organization. In addition to this governing role, the religious communities provide annual financial support to Marian House. In addition to the Corporate Board, Marian House is governed by an independent, all-volunteer Board of Directors, which sets policy, supervises operations, and oversees all business affairs. For more information, see our Board of Directors roster. Marian House is proud to be a recipient of the Seal of Excellence award by the Maryland Association of non-profit Organizations. Certification in the Standards for Excellence Program is bestowed only to the most well-managed and responsibly governed non-profit organizations that have demonstrated compliance with 55 specific standards for excellence based on honesty, integrity, fairness, respect, trust, responsibility, and accountability. Marian House has met, complied with, and integrated the standards for excellence into all its activities to successfully complete this voluntary certification program.

UMBC Stadium is a practice and performance space that provides 90,000 square feet of artificial turf surface for the UMBC outdoor sports teams. the Club Baltimore was in a state of complete destruction after the Great Fire of 1904. As a result, the city turned to the members of the engineering profession to plan, design and execute its rebuilding efforts. Collectively, engineers could create partnerships, combine their talents and exchange ideas that would restore Baltimore and its business population. In February 1905, Alfred Quick, the Water Engineer for the City of Baltimore, envisioned a common meeting place where engineers could exchange technical ideas and foster camaraderie. After discovering the overwhelming interest for such an idea, Quick and other engineers began conducting meetings to prepare an organizational plan, draft a constitution and bylaws and elect officers. In April 1905, Engineers Club was born from the ashes of the Great Fire the previous year. The Club originated with 32 charter members. For the first six years of its existence, the Club resided in the Womens Exchange Building. In 1911, it moved to the new Arundel Club Building where it remained for the next 10 years. The lure of downtown and the need for more space forced the Club to relocate at Light and Redwood Streets in the Commerce Trust Building. The continual expansion of the club again dictated another move into a new facility in the Bickford Building on W. Fayette Street. Unfortunately, after the Clubs 35 year tenure in the same location, the Baltimore Urban Renewal Program of 1960 called for the destruction of the Brickford Building and dictated another move for organization. After an extensive search for a new property, the Club settled in the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion in Mount Vernon. After leasing the facility for two years, the Club purchased the Baltimore landmark in 1963 and remains there today. Throughout the years, the Club has grown in terms of members and diversity. Although designed originally as an organization for engineers, the Society has opened its doors to men and women from all professions. A celebrated social center with a prestigious business tradition, the Clubs membership is comprised of prominent individuals from Baltimores business, political and social communities. The Engineers Club provides these members with a relaxing, intelligent atmosphere that is conducive to the demands of modern living. Current members enjoy entertaining business acquaintances, friends or family in the charm of the historic Garrett-Jacobs Mansion. For over a century, the organization has served the technical, educational, civic and social needs of the entire metropolitan business and professional communities. The Engineers Club is proud to have played an instrumental role in shaping its Baltimores character, and welcomes the opportunities to continue to influence its future. Maryland Science Center, located in Baltimore, is a private, nonprofit organization that showcases a range of exhibits to visitors. The center features full size skeletons of dinosaurs and casts of fossilized remains. It also exhibits the live diamondback terrapins, crabs, fish, seahorses and native plants in aquatic display tanks.
