The Sudbury Valley School allows its students rare freedom and responsibility for their own education. Students of all ages move freely among rooms in the stone mansion that serves as the school's main building, as well as the nearby converted barn and the school's ten-acre property. Students may make use of all facilities, such as a digital arts studio, a library and a full kitchen. Adults are available to facilitate students' learning and interests, but do not direct their learning.
MetroWest Legal Services, formerly South Middlesex Legal Services, provides free civil legal representation to low-income clients. Eligible clients reside within 36 towns throughout Massachusetts. The donation-driven firm aims to protect the rights of the poor, elderly and disabled. It accepts cases pertaining to domestic violence, abuse, custody and family law.
Sudbury River Tennis Club is a private club located on Edgell Road. Tennis courts are clay and set back from the road in a wooded area. Men's and women's locker rooms are available. Membership is by application, and there is usually a waiting list. Members may sign up for private and group lessons, clinics, and teams for men, women and children. In addition, there are camp programs for children.
Based in Framingham, The Knox Trail Council of Boy Scouts of America serves three districts of Scouts in MetroWest and Central Massachusetts.
The Liberty District, which includes Framingham, also includes Ashland, Holliston, Maynard, Natick, Sherborn, Stow, Sudbury, & Wayland.
The Knox Trail Council is the consolidation of the Norumbega and Algonquin Councils in 1996.
The Council also manages the E. Paul Robsham Scout Reservation in Bolton and the Nobscot Scout Reservation - in Framingham/Sudbury.
Nationally, the Boy Scouts just celebrated its 100th year.
Scouts participate in Den and Troop meetings, go on outings, earn badges, do community service, and go camping.
Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 894 is located on Park Street at the intersection of Pearl Street. It was founded in 1904 and has roughly 500 members that meet on the first and third Monday of each month.
Fraternal Order of Eagles supports various local community organizations, including the Boys & Girls Clubs and the local food pantry. The Order sponsors an annual Thanksgiving Day dinner and has two function halls available for rent.
The Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni, or IAFSA, is a non-profit self governed organization that has been in operation since 1874. IAFSA receives and distributes scholarships, awards and no-interest loans to students enrolled at Framingham State University.
Funding is the product of donations, bequests and the rental of the Alumni House, which is maintained by IAFSA and can be rented for business and family functions.
The Metrowest Center for Independent Living is an institution dedicated to assisting disabled persons who wish to be fully integrated into society. The group was established by dissabled persons and follows the independent living paradigm that was created in the 1970s. At this location people work with independent living coordinators to learn more about services provided by towns, the state and other agencies. The center also offers independent living –skills training among many other services.
