Dr. Ellis is a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon. He has a subspecialty interest in treating patients with complex brain and spinal cord vascular lesions as well as skull base tumors. He completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees with honors at Harvard University prior to enrolling in the M.D. program at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. As a medical student Dr. Ellis began cultivating an interest in brain tumor biology and was awarded a Doris Duke Research Fellowship in this field. After medical school he began his neurosurgical training at the Neurological Institute of New York/Columbia University Medical Center. His early post-doctoral research focused on developing growth factor-induced murine models of brain and spinal cord tumors. Dr. Ellis has gone on to forge an independent research path with diverse basic and clinical science interests in the fields of brain tumor and cerebrovascular biology. Through collaborative efforts, his current research work focuses on the development of translational methods for improving intra-arterial drug delivery to the nervous system. As a cerebrovascular neurosurgery fellow at Emory University Hospital, he obtained special training in the microsurgical treatment of patients with brain aneurysms, vascular malformations of the brain and spine, carotid disease, and skull base tumors. Dr. Ellis enjoys scientific writing and has authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, books, and various web-based media. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on topics of basic research, clinical management, and other academic interests.

Rafael A. Ortiz, MD is the Chief of Neuro-Endovascular Surgery and Interventional Neuro-Radiology at Lenox Hill Hospital and is Associate Professor of Neurosurgery, Neurology and Radiology at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Upon his arrival to Lenox Hill Hospital in 2012, Dr. Ortiz spearheaded the creation and rapid development of a comprehensive, innovative and safe program of endovascular neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. Ortiz completed his residency in neurology and fellowship in stroke/neuro-critical care at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. In 2006 he moved to New York City to complete fellowship training in interventional neuro-radiology and endovascular surgery at the Hyman-Newman Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery at Roosevelt Hospital, were he served as attending physician and director of the fellowship program until June of 2012. Among his numerous accolades, Dr. Ortiz was honored with a Proclamation by the New York State Senate in 2012 for his dedication to community education and outstanding patient care. In 2010 he received The American Heart Associations Young Heart Award for achievements in Cardiovascular Science and Medicine and also the American Heart Associations Tu Corazon Latino Award for dedication to patient education and community health. More recently, in 2013, he was recognized as one of the Men of the Year in the City of New York by El Diario La Prensa newspaper. In 2014, he received the Leadership and Vision Award of the American Heart and Stroke Association. In 2015 Dr. Ortiz was invited as a guest speaker to present on “Innovation in Healthcare” at the Platform Summit. In 2016 Dr. Ortiz received the Latino Trendsetter Award from LatinTRENDS. Dr. Ortiz is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Heart and Stroke Association and is the Co-Chair of Tu Corazon Latino, an innovative health movement that brings physicians, executives, public servants and community leaders together to explore health issues and solutions for at risk populations. Dr. Ortiz specializes in endovascular (interventional) treatment of cerebral aneurysms, embolization of brain tumors and vascular tumors of the head and neck region, cerebral and spinal arteriovenous malformations, treatment of craniofacial vascular lesions (venous, lymphatic, AVMs, hemangiomas) in adults and children, stenting of carotid artery stenosis, as well as revascularization procedures for acute stroke. He is known for his dedication to community education, patient satisfaction and outstanding patient care.
