Located in the historic district of Old Marblehead, the Marblehead Museum & Historical Society serves the community with a treasure trove of historical artifacts and archives, as well as guided tours of the Lee Mansion, which was built in 1768. More than 200 privately owned colonial period homes contribute to the historic charm of this important fishing port and harbor. Abbot Hall is both the town hall and a museum. It houses the original "Spirit of '76," painted by Archibald MacNeal Willard. Also included in its collection is the deed to Marblehead from the Nanapashemet tribe of Native Americans (1684).
Government offices include the Selectmen's Office, Town Administrator, Town Clerk, Town Planner, Parking Clerk and Historical Commission.
