The Atlanta Children's Shelter (ACS) is tucked away amongst the buildings of North Avenue Presbyterian Church. The main entrance is within the parking garage off of Peachtree Street. Once inside the doors, the atmosphere is cheerful and welcoming, despite the numerous families staying there as an escape from previous abusive homes. ACS is certified by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, an esteemed honor. Corporate and individual volunteers and sponsors keep the organization alive. A nutrition group meets monthly to teach women about good health, and the Keys to Indepeendence program helps mothers move into their own apartments. Other programs teach women about budgeting, exercise and renting homes. Children can play on a playground outside, and local volunteers help manage in-house activities. Sometimes the Pastor of North Avenue Presbyterian, Dr. Scott Weimer, comes to visit the children. The goal of ACS is to bring families to self-sufficiency.
