Based in Zeeland, Mich., New Groningen Elementary School has been operational for more than 25 years. A part of Zeeland Public School District, New Groningen Elementary enrolls more than 2,000 students from grades one through five. New Groningen holds monthly parent and staff representatives and school council administrators meetings. The school offers a wide variety of learning procedures and methodologies, including read alouds, shared and guided reading, word study, mini lessons, spelling program, poetry sessions, interactive writing, writer s workshops, special handwriting classes, reading buddies, and programs using cubes, number cards, number lines, and pattern shapes. Its teachers utilize a full-inclusion model, ongoing assessments, individualized lesson plans, modified materials and class arrangements, grade level conferences, and parent communication. The school employs more than 20 support staff members, including counselors, diagnosticians, speech, physical and occupational therapists, special education personnel, reading teachers, custodial staff, community volunteers, nurses and office personnel.
