Founded in 1869 in Boston's South End, Children's Hospital is now in the Longwood Medical Area. The hospital currently has 395 beds and is one of the largest pediatric medical centers in the United States. It also is the pediatric teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. The Children's Hospital Department of Surgery is committed to providing pediatric surgical services and conducting pediatric surgery research.

Children’s Hospital Boston and Harvard's Immune Disease Institute have joined to create the Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine, located on Blackfan Circle in the Karp Building. The non-profit research institution conducts biomedical research to find ways to improve health and strengthen immune defense.
