About Lutheran HomeIn the late 1960s, the Lutheran churches in Southeast Missouri recognized the need for a long term care facility that could provide skilled nursing care for those in their congregations who required such services. In May of 1967, representatives from 17 area congregations met at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson and formed The Lutheran Home for the Aged as a not-for-profit skilled nursing facility that would provide care for the elderly in a Christian environment. Funds were raised to purchase 36 acres on Bloomfield Road in Cape Girardeau and construct a 60 bed skilled nursing facility. The Lutheran Home was formally dedicated on January 23, 1972, and admitted its first three residents the very next day. Word about The Lutheran Homes outstanding quality of care quickly spread throughout the community and full capacity was reached after only six months. Over the years, the skilled nursing facility has been expanded five times and currently has the capacity for 274 residents including 32 beds in a Special Care unit dedicated to serving the needs of residents with dementia.Always anticipating the many needs of the aging in our community, The Lutheran Home added Physical Therapy in 1987, Adult Day Care in 1990, Assisted Living in 1992, Saxony Village retirement community in 1994, Home Health in 1996, and Hospice in 2004.Today, The Lutheran Home continues the mission set forth more than forty years ago by offering a complete continuum of care for the elderly in our community. Whether adult day care, assisted living, skilled nursing, home health or hospice, no other organization in Southeast Missouri has the experience and expertise to match The Lutheran Home for compassionate Christian care.Furthermore, The Lutheran Homes continuing status as a not-for-profit organization means that all proceeds are used to improve facilities, equipment, and maintain an outstanding staff - all for the benefit of our residents.Lutheran Home - 2825 Bloomfield Road, MO 63703 Cape Girardeau - 573.335.0158
