With the closing of the Bay Meadows Race Track in 2008, Golden Gate Fields is the only major horse racing track in Northern California. The Track has a long and illustrious history in the annals of horse racing and first opened in 1941. Located adjacent to the San Francisco Bay and the Eastshore Freeway, Golden Gate Fields sits on 140 acres and includes a one-mile synthetic track, a turf course measuring 9/10 of a mile, stalls for 1,420 horses, a main grandstand with seating for about 8,000 people, a clubhouse with seating for approximately 5,200 customers, the Turf Club restaurant and a variety of other eating establishments.
