This bustling community center in the Elmwood section of West Hartford serves the entire town with a wide array of classes, leisure activities, trips and special events; it hosts a senior center as well. Elmwood's facilities include an auditorium, a full-sized gym, a billiards room, a dance studio, a pottery and ceramics studio, a library, a lounge, classrooms of various sizes and two kitchens. The facility is also available for rent for events ranging from weddings to business seminars.
RCA students attend traditional high schools in the morning to study requisite courses such as math, science, English and history. In the afternoon, they are bused to the center for two elective arts courses, ranging from acting, dance, voice, theater, musical theater and production.
The Westport Arts Center is a visual and performing arts organization that offers arts experiences to the entire community. The center has been in the community since the 1960s, when it was incorporated as the Westport-Weston Arts Council in 1969. Since that time, the center has worked to preserve Westport's cultural heritage and tradition of supporting the arts.
The Westport Arts Center offices and galleries are located on the banks of the Saugatuck River in downtown Westport. In addition to presenting exhibitions, concerts, lectures and film screenings in its 2000 square-foot gallery, the center also has a studio where children's workshops are held as well as a smaller Studio Gallery annex.
Since 1995, artistic director Betty Seibert, a Fellow of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, London, England, and Maestro Cecchetti Final Diploma recipient, has been professionally training students at the Cheshire Dance Centre. All ages and ability levels are welcomed at the Centre and a wide selection of classes in multiple dance styles is offered throughout the week. Each year an annual concert and a performance of The Nutcracker is presented to audiences. Serious students are selected for the Seibert Dancers, who receive extended training in the disciplines of dance, attend field trips and participate in professional performances in New York and Boston.
