The Inspectional Services Department is responsible for enforcing building, housing, health, sanitation and safety regulations mandated by city and state governments. The department oversees all activities related to building permits, zoning reviews, safety inspections and the licensure of food establishments.
The Department's Environmental Services office is also responsible for overseeing and enforcing laws and ordinances related to trash storage and pickup as well as rodent control.
Located along The Freedom Trail, this building was built in the North End in 1932. It is home to various City of Boston offices such as the Human Resource department, the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and the Boston Police Department Area A, Districts 1 & 15. A section of the building which was an old printing company is now used for the North Bennett Street School for grades K-8. The building is also used for public meetings and city conferences.
