Established in 1966, The U.S. Department of Transportation develops policies to provide various transportation services. It is a primary agency operated by the federal government and deals with the safety, adequacy and efficiency of the transportation system. The department consists of individual operating administrations, including the Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Highway Administration, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Federal Railroad Administration and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Federal Aviation Administration oversees the safety of civil aviation. The Federal Railroad Administration promotes safe and environmentally sound rail transportation. The Federal Transit Administration assists in developing improved mass transportation system for cities and communities throughout the United States.
