Methodist University, one of the seven hospitals comprising Methodist Healthcare based in Memphis, Tenn., provides medical services, health care and outpatient treatment in Eastern Arkansas, West Tennessee and North Mississippi. The system s services include cancer care, heart treatments, transplantation and surgical care. Along with the hospitals, the Methodist Healthcare system includes several rural health clinics and a home health agency. In 2002, Methodist University Hospital was created as a partnership of two health care providers: Methodist Healthcare and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Formerly known as Methodist Central, Methodist University is a 695-plus-bed facility and is the principal adult private teaching hospital for the University of Tennessee. Other hospitals within the Methodist Healthcare system include Le Bonheur Childrens Medical Center, Memphis, Tenn.; and Methodist Fayette Hospital, Somerville, Tenn. Methodist Hospital was founded in 1918 by John M. Sherard, a North Mississippi farmer and dedicated United Methodist layperson.
