The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) enforces controlled substance laws and regulations of the United States. It oversees the criminal and civil justice system of the United States or any other competent jurisdiction involved in the growing, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances for illicit traffic in the United States. The administration also recommends and supports programs aimed at reducing the availability of illegal controlled substances in domestic and international markets. The Drug Enforcement Administration undertakes seizure and forfeiture of assets derived from and traceable or intended to be used for drug trafficking. In addition, it liaisons with the United Nations, Interpol and other organizations on matters relating to international drug control programs. The Drug Enforcement Administration has been operational for more than 35 years and maintains an office in Birmingham, Ala.
