Governed by the Department of the Interior, Minerals Management Service, also known as MMS, is a federal agency that manages various types of mineral resources in the United States. It focuses on oil and natural gas reserves in Outer Continental Shelf region in the U.S. The agency collects, accounts for and disburses annual revenues of more than $5 billion from federal onshore and offshore mineral leases. It administers Offshore Energy and Minerals Management (OEMM) and Minerals Revenue Management programs. Minerals Management Service also manages operational assets in Colorado, Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico. It additionally manages over manages 75 federal oil and gas leases in Southern California with nearly 45 leasing producing approximately 25 million barrels of oil and more than 50 billion cubic feet of gas annually from over 20 platforms.
