The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community is a federally recognized Indian tribe, which was formally organized under federal reservation status 41 years ago. Tribal members are direct descendants of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux people who occupied land near the lower Minnesota River.

The tribe owns more than 3,360 acres of land within Shakopee and Prior Lake. The Community owns and operates the Mystic Lake Casino and Hotel, the Little Six Casino, using gaming revenue to provide a range of services to its members, as a sovereign government. The largest employer in Scott County, the Community also supports a number of charitable causes, both locally and nationally.

With its administrative office in Prior Lake, Minn., Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools serves more than 6,000 students in nine schools. Each school has a team of counselors that works with students and parents to promote personal success by enhancing the development of academic and interpersonal skills and self-understanding. The schools have libraries that provide access to books and periodicals for direct classroom instruction, as well as professional staff development. The schools core curriculum includes English, mathematics, science, social studies, foreign languages, history, music theory and physics. The district s schools offer a variety of sports activities, including football, basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball, golf, tennis, softball and wrestling. Each campus of Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools is supported by local government agencies, businesses, and civic and parent organizations.

Formed in 1929, Prior Lake Fire Department is a provider of emergency disaster management and planning, fire suppression, rescue, prevention, code enforcement and public education. The department has two stations, namely Fire Station No. 1 and Fire Station No. 2. Located in Prior Lake, Minn., it is one of the departments of the City of Prior Lake. The city also operates other departments, such as administration, building and transportation services, communications, finance, recreation, community development and natural resources, police and public works/engineering/maintenance.
