Established in 1962, Houghtaling Elementary School serves more than 400 students in prekindergarten through grade six and is a part of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District. It organizes a variety of extracurricular activities and competitions, including science fair, night out, Kanayama Exchange program, reading competition and spelling bee. The Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District has various departments, including business office, curriculum, human resources, maintenance and special services. Additionally, the school district serves children with special needs through free special education programming. The school district also operates various elementary, middle and high schools, including Ketchikan High School, Tongass School of Arts & Sciences and Ketchikan Charter School.
