Basin Electric Power Cooperative is an electric generation and transmission cooperative. The company s core business is generating and delivering electricity to wholesale customers, primarily its member systems. Basin Electric is a membership cooperative organized on a nonprofit basis; it has no capital stock. The co-op provides wholesale energy with products and services that support customers in rural America. The company was established in 1961 as a result of regional efforts by electric distribution cooperatives and the Rural Electrification Administration in Washington, D.C., seeing a need for power on the upper Great Plains to supplement the limited hydroelectric resources of the dams. Basin Electric Power Cooperative is headquartered in Bismarck, N.D., with other locations in Stanton and Beulah, N.D., and Wheathead, Wyo.
