SunLine Transit Agency is the regional transportation mode of choice. We provide safe and environmentally conscious public transportation services and alternative fuel solutions to meet the mobility needs of the Coachella Valley. With a challenging economy putting the brakes on so many businesses and organizations across our great nation, many have down shifted their operational plans for the year and announced various forms of retrenchment. At SunLine Transit Agency, we see this time as an opportunity to take a somewhat different route. While SunLine is certainly not immune to the financial pressures at hand, specifically with regard to projected State budget cuts in transportation, we continue to take bold steps to provide environmentally conscious public transportation services and alternative fuel solutions to meet the mobility needs of the Coachella Valley. One only needs to look back at 2008 to understand how committed the Agency?s Board of Directors, management and staff are to achieving that goal. The year began with SunLine?s first ?State of Public Transit Luncheon Forum?, a landmark event that drew industry, business and government leaders from across the country to discuss the trends that will shape the future of public transit. Keynote speaker, William Millar, President of the American Public Transportation Association, shared current and future transit developments at the Agency, as well as national transit trends. In addition, attendees learned that in many respects, the future has already arrived in the Coachella Valley, led by SunLine?s path-clearing advancements with hydrogen-powered transit, commercial adoption of alternative fuels and the technologies necessary to support them. SunLine served as a stop on the landmark 2008 Hydrogen Road Tour which showcased hydrogen-powered vehicles in use today. The event, which attracted media attention in numerous cities across the United States, followed a major upgrade to the Agency?s SunFuels fueling station that provides compressed natural gas (CNG) and hydrogen to the Valley?s fleet of alternative energy-powered vehicles. The expanded fueling infrastructure, featuring new dispensers and a consumer-friendly card reader, now has the capacity to accommodate up to five hydrogen buses daily. Thanks to extensive publicity, most Valley residents recognize SunLine?s role in these notable breakthroughs. What they may not know, however, is that reaching these goals would not be possible without exceptional partners and we have been blessed with the very best. I want to single out our colleagues at CalStart, South Coast Air Quality Management District and the Federal Transit Association. Their vision and ever-present support has made us a better Agency. Of all the improvements made to the system in 2008, none were more appreciated by SunLines most important constituency, its passengers, than the Bus Replacement and Expansion Program. The forward-looking initiative, authorized by the Board over two years ago, has brought some of the cleanest-burning, most efficient CNG buses to our roads today. A total of 68 buses now comprise SunLine?s fixed route fleet, in addition to an entirely new collection of 27 paratransit vehicles. Riders have responded favorably to the distinctive, eco-friendly graphics on the vehicles, as well as bench replacements and i-STOPS SunLine has instituted over the past 12 months. The improvements occurred as part of a sweeping service enhancement upgrade that also includes bus shelter replacements.

Several wineries have tasting rooms in the Old Roma Station, which dates from 1875, near the Memorial Bridge entrance to Healdsburg. This is the original wine station for area grape growers shipping wine (via the nearby railroad) to San Francisco. Around back is Hudson Street Wineries, a collective tasting room for several small, quality producers. Among them, Bluenose is the current label for Paul Brasset, former winemaker for Fritz, White Oak, Christopher Creek and others, who makes a potent Dry Creek zinfandel. Another Dry Creek zin, Rockin' Z, is offered from Shippey Vineyards, along with a couple other of their wines. Sadler-Wells from Vineburg near Sonoma provides vineyard-designate pinot noir, and the wines of Sebastopol's Willowbrook Cellars completes the current partners.

Hudson Street Wineries hosts events in the barrel room, which opens up from the long tasting bar, creating a generous space for public and private events. For locals or visitors, the variety and quality of small-production wines available for tasting or purchase makes this a worthwhile visit. Chances are the person at the tasting room counter is one of the winemakers, so inside information is yours for the asking.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) does an extraordinary job in giving visitors of all ages a "big picture" of our planet. The museum houses one of the world's top collections of natural and cultural history. NHM protects more than 35 million objects, some dating back 4.5 billion years. Many are displayed within the Dinosaur, Mammal, Bird, and Insect Halls, as well as in the Discovery Center, interactive Nature Lab, Gem and Mineral Rooms, and Nature Gardens.

Best and worst time to go to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles
Not surprisingly, the museum is crowded on weekends, holidays, and during the summer. Weekdays can be crowded, too, with school field trips. The best times to visit NHM are weekday afternoons, after 1:30 p.m., and weekend mornings at 9:30 a.m.

Must See/Do at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles
The Natural History Museum has a wealth of "must-sees" starting with the Halls of North American and African Mammals, with dioramas of animals in their "realistic" settings. The 14,000 square foot Dinosaur Hall is stunning. Be sure not to miss the Nature Lab on Level G with live animals, including frogs, turtles, snakes and rats.

Admission to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles
The museum is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (except New Year's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas). Admission ranges from $5 to mid-teens; children 2 and under are free. Specialty combo tickets, which include the seasonal Butterfly and Spider Pavilions, are higher.

How to get to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles
The Natural History Museum is located in Exposition Park at 900 Exposition Boulevard between Vermont Avenue and Figueroa Street. Paid parking is available (cash only) at the Museum's Car Park (Exposition Blvd. and Bill Robertson Lane). The Expo Rail Line stops right at the museum (exit at the Expo/Vermont stop).

Insider tips for visitors to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles
Free admission is offered on the first Tuesday of each month, except in July and August. If you take Metro to the Natural History Museum, show your ticket or pass and receive $1.25 off an adult admission. The daily "Hidden in Plain Sight" tours offer fun hidden factoids that you might miss-like the predatory wolves hidden in the plains bison diorama.
