Founded in 1936, the Main-Transit Fire Department is a voluntary organization that provides emergency medical and fire and motor vehicle rescue services to residents of Amherst in New York. The department is comprised of a ladies auxiliary, exempt association, explorers post and active members. The Main-Transit Fire Department also works with neighboring departments when mutual aid services are required. It serves residents spread over an area of more than 5 square miles. The department s apparatus includes engines and rescue and utility trucks. It participates in the Northern Erie County Firemans Softball League. The Main-Transit Fire Department additionally supports various charitable initiatives.
