About Dr. Matthew J. Crawford Matthew J. Crawford, DO, PhD, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports injuries. Dr. Crawford has a special interest in revision surgery of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and arthroscopic shoulder procedures such as rotator cuff repair, SLAP/labral repairs, biceps tenodesis, and AC reconstruction. Beyond sports medicine, Dr. Crawford provides care for a variety of conditions, including arthritis, joint replacements, and fractures. Dr. Crawford earned his medical degree from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, attending the Medical Scientists Training Program while concurrently obtaining his Ph.D. in biomedical sciences. He completed his residency at Michigan State University in East Lansing, where he cared for the MSU football team and was a team physician for local high schools.  Dr. Crawford completed a sports medicine fellowship with advanced training in the arthroscopic treatments of sports injuries at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. During his fellowship training, Dr. Crawford also grew his expertise as an assistant team physician with the Houston Texans, Houston Astros, and the University of Houston Cougars. Dr. Crawford shares his knowledge through orthopaedic research papers and through authoring of a chapter in a leading orthopaedic textbook about healing meniscal tears of the knee. His research project addressing allograft safety won the prestigious Cabaud Award, while his research about labral tears of the hip earned the Frank Stinchfield Award. Learn More

Dr. Cunningham works with each athlete to develop an individual treatment plan that emphasizes the least invasive treatments possible with a goal of minimal recuperation and downtime. His patients have included skilled athletes in football, basketball, baseball, and hockey, including members of the Dallas Cowboys at their Austin training camp, Austin Ice Bats hockey players, Southwestern University athletes, and many other college and high school athletes. He served for 15 years as a traveling team physician for the men’s alpine downhill US Olympic Ski Team, providing on-the-hill medical race coverage in North America and Europe, including qualifying races for the Winter Olympics. As a sports medicine specialist, Dr. Cunningham also treats many seasoned weekend warriors such as runners, skiers (downhill, snowboard, and water), and tennis and golf enthusiasts. After medical school and residency training in Dallas, he completed a sports medicine/knee fellowship with renowned orthopedic specialist Dr. Richard Steadman in Vail, Colorado, and underwent further shoulder training in England and Canada. While with Dr. Steadman, the originator of the popular microfracture cartilage treatment technique, he developed a strong interest in the care of cartilage injuries and now has more than 20 years of experience with surgical microfracture and related procedures. Dr. Szerlip has authored multiple research papers on complex shoulder arthroplasty. His work has been presented on a national and international level and he has also served as a reviewer of manuscripts for various orthopedic journals. He is a member of several professional organizations including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics and the Texas Medical Association. Dr. Szerlip believes it is essential to educate his patients and promote shared decision-making based on medical evidence, clinical recommendations, and personalized goals to achieve the best possible outcome.
