Lucian Lozonschi, M.D., is professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the director of Surgical Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation. Previously, Dr. Lozonschi served as surgical director of heart transplantation at the University of Wisconsin in Madison for over six years. Dr. Lozonschi performed the first combined heart-liver transplantation in Wisconsin. He was chief of cardiac surgery at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, which became one of the three VA hospitals in the U.S. that were approved for in-house implantation of left ventricular assist devices. In 2017, he was the first surgeon in the U.S. to implant the latest Heartmate 3 device in the veteran population., Dr Lozonschi has a long-standing interest in robotic-assisted minimally invasive coronary bypass surgery and is the PI in the NIH sponsored robotic/hybrid coronary revascularization trial. He has been the co-PI for all TAVR trials in Wisconsin and he helped develop the Tendyne valve, a transcatheter mitral valve replacement system he invented and patented in Kiel, Germany. This led him to become the surgical proctor for the first human implants with a transcatheter mitral valve in the world, in Sydney and Brisbane, Australia, as well as in the U.S. at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Medstar Hospital in Washington, D.C., and the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio., Dr. Lozonschi received his medical degree from G.T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Iasi, Romania. He completed a general surgery internship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, general surgery residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Hospital, New York, and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. Eric Powers is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. He is the director of the acute coronary syndrome center and medical director of the cardiology inpatient progressive care unit. His clinical interests are invasive, interventional and general cardiology., Dr. Powers is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. He did his internal medicine and cardiology training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Prior to moving to the Medical University of South Carolina, Dr. Powers was on the faculty and director of the cardiac catheterization laboratories at Columbia University in New York and subsequently at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia., Dr. Powers’ research career has involved both laboratory and clinical research. Areas of research have included acute myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndromes, interventional cardiology, vascular biology, congestive heart failure and valvular heart disease., Dr. Powers has coauthored over one hundred peer-reviewed publications. He is a member of a number of professional societies including the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions. Dr. Powers has served on research and educational committees for these organizations and has served as an editorial consultant for a number of medical journals. He has served on an NIH study section and grant review panels for the American Heart Association and NASA., Dr. Powers has received a number of teaching, community and clinical awards and has been named as one of America’s Top Doctors and one of the Best Doctors in America.

After completing medical school at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, Dr. David Gregg completed his residency in internal medicine with additional training in cell biology and cardiovascular genomics at Duke University Medical Center. He then continued his fellowship training in cardiology at the University of California-San Francisco with a subspecialty focus on adult congenital heart disease and non-invasive imaging. Returning to the Medical University of South Carolina, Dr. Gregg founded the adult congenital heart disease program in 2006 in collaboration with pediatric cardiology and now serves as its director. In addition to providing in- and outpatient consultation and coordinating comprehensive care for patients with adult congenital heart disease, Dr. Gregg has an active general cardiology practice with a particular interest in valvular heart disease. Dr. Gregg is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and adult congenital heart disease.

Dr. Eric Graham graduated from Indiana University in 1995 and completed medical school at the University of Illinois in 1999. He went on to complete both his pediatric residency and pediatric cardiology fellowship training at the Medical University of South Carolina. He joined the staff at MUSC in 2005 as an assistant professor, was promoted to associate professor in 2011, and professor with tenure in 2017. Dr. Graham has expertise in pediatric cardiac critical care with special interest in single ventricle physiology and the perioperative management of neonates. Dr. Graham previously served as the director of the pediatric cardiology fellowship training program and director of the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit at MUSC. He currently serves as the chief of pediatric cardiology., , Dr. Graham’s research interests include defining and modulating the inflammatory response to cardiopulmonary bypass, improving outcomes for children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and related single ventricle physiology, and improving the perioperative management of congenital heart disease. He participates in many multidisciplinary clinical trials; has presented his work at regional, national, and international meetings; has published numerous articles; and has been the recipient of awards and grants to support his research. He is currently the principal investigator on an NIH-funded multicenter randomized control trial evaluating the efficacy of steroids in improving outcomes in neonatal cardiac surgery.,

Dr. Jeffrey Winterfield is an associate professor of cardiac electrophysiology at the Medical University of South Carolina. He received his undergraduate degree from Amherst College in Massachusetts and his medical degree with honors from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas., After completing his internal medicine residency, he was selected for a highly competitive fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at the Brigham and Womens Hospital, part of Harvard Medical School, in Boston. Dr. Winterfield’s interest includes cardiac arrhythmias; he remained on service at the Brigham and Womens Hospital as a fellow in clinical cardiac electrophysiology where he trained with several leaders in the field. In 2011, he took his first faculty position in the prestigious heart rhythm program at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago where he remained for five years. During that time in Chicago, he published multiple papers and abstracts, participated as a principal investigator in clinical trials regarding complex rhythm management, and served as faculty in national and international meetings. In 2016, he was recruited to MUSC for his expertise in catheter ablation of complex arrhythmias, particularly ventricular tachycardia (VT) and premature ventricular contractions (PVCs). , He has special expertise in catheter ablation of arrhythmias on the outside of the heart (epicardial VT). Dr. Winterfield takes care of adult patients with cardiac rhythm disturbances including supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), Wolf-Parkinson-White (WPW), atrial fibrillation (AF), as well as premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) and ventricular tachycardia (VT). He has a particular interest in VT in patients with advanced heart disease including ischemic and non-ischemic cardiomyopathies.

Dr. Pamela Morris is a graduate of Wellesley College and Duke University School of Medicine. She completed her internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at Duke Medical Center. She is currently director of preventive cardiology and co-director of women’s heart care at the Medical University of South Carolina., Preventive cardiology has been a career interest for Dr. Morris. She has served as the medical director of the Duke University preventive approach to cardiology program (now the Duke Center for Living) and consultant to the Mayo Clinic cardiovascular health clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She currently provides comprehensive, integrated preventive care for patients referred with heart disease risk factors and for patients with established coronary heart disease., Dr. Morris is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases, and clinical lipidology (management of cholesterol disorders). She specializes in evaluation, diagnosis and management of patients with complex lipid abnormalities. Referrals are accepted for treatment strategies including nutrition, pharmacologic (drug) therapy, as well as LDL apheresis., As co-director of women’s heart care at MUSC, Dr. Morris maintains an active interest in gender differences in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease. She also participates nationally in educational programs for both physicians and women to raise awareness of women’s cardiovascular risks., Dr. Morris also specializes in the early detection of subclinical atherosclerosis and is experienced in assessment of coronary calcification and noninvasive angiography with both electron beam tomography (EBCT) and multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT)., Dr. Morris is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Preventive Medicine. She is a member of a number of other professional societies including the American College of Physicians, the National Lipid Association and Southeast Lipid Association, the American Society for Preventive Cardiology, the Society of Cardiovascular CT, and the Society of Atherosclerosis Imaging and Prevention. She remains an active volunteer in the American Heart Association and has served on the area board of directors, chairperson of the AHA Heart Walk, and the AHA Go Red for Women awareness campaign.

Dr. Daniel Judge is a professor of medicine in cardiology at MUSC. He received his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania, and did his post-graduate training in internal medicine, cardiology, and advanced heart failure/transplant cardiology at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Varsha Bandisode graduated from the University of Georgia undergraduate program in 1991 and completed her medical school training at Mercer University School of Medicine in 1995. She went on to complete her pediatric residency training at Jackson Memorial Hospital at the University of Miami in 1998. She completed her training in pediatric cardiology and further specialized training in pediatric interventional catheterization at the Medical University of South Carolina in 2002. She joined the faculty at MUSC as an assistant professor in pediatric cardiology and was promoted to associate professor in 2010. She became the director of the Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization Lab in 2005 and continues to advance the services of the catheterization lab in that role. , Dr. Bandisode has advanced the care provided by MUSCs pediatric cardiac cath lab to include trans-catheter repair of ASDs, PDAs, and VSDs as well as other anomalies, trans-catheter enlargement of narrowed vessels including coarctation of the aorta, pulmonary artery stenosis, and narrowing of major veins, and trans-catheter replacement of pulmonary valves. Her interests lie in the care and treatment of all congenital heart disease in infants, children, and adults. She has special interests in diagnostic and interventional catheterization treatment of heart disease and other complex cardiac disease.

Dr. Robert F. Sisson, III, received his undergraduate degree from George Mason University and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Sisson went on to complete his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiology at Pennsylvania State University. During his fellowship, he was selected to be the Cardiology Division’s chief fellow. For over 25 years, Dr. Sisson has worked as a general and board-certified interventional cardiologist before moving to the Charleston area to work at MUSC and focus on clinical noninvasive cardiology in the outpatient setting.
