Arapahoe County Government is housed in Colorado s first county and is one of the largest counties in Colorado with a population of more than 527,000. Arapahoe County was named for the Arapaho Indians, who along with the Cheyenne Indians, occupied most of Colorado when it was only a territory. The county employs approximately 1,800 people and features a nearly $294 million budget. Arapahoe County is governed by the Board of County Commissioners. The commissioners, along with the assessor, clerk and recorder, coroner, district attorney, sheriff and treasurer are elected by voters to administer county services. Arapahoe County Public Works Department oversees the planning, organization and implementation of various types of maintenance projects. Located in Littleton, Colo., the public works department provides a wide variety of services pertaining to civil and traffic engineering, sewers, streets, solid waste, storm drains and recycling. Open Monday through Friday, the department s building services division provides maintenance and repair services for city-owned buildings, and offers technical support and assistance to departments in facility construction. It also provides printing services, and administers contracts for janitorial and elevator services, and pest control. The department s engineering division offers several services, including surveying, geoprocessing updates, project inspections, drafting and building permit reviews. Additionally, it provides 24-hour emergency services and general engineering information to citizens and other city departments.
