The mission of the Gwinnett County Department of Corrections is to protect citizens by providing a secure, safe and humane environment for state and county inmates sentenced to full-time incarceration and to provide an inmate labor force that will help offset the cost of housing sentenced inmates. The department operates the work release program to provide a sentencing alternative that allows offenders to maintain regular employment and meet financial obligations while serving their nonworking hours in custody. It also manages the work alternative program that allows first offenders an alternative to incarceration by having them perform community service work and requiring them to pay sufficient fees to cover the costs of the program. The department also provides educational opportunities, vocational training and self-help programs to offenders that will help them to become law-abiding and productive citizens upon their release from custody.
