The Newport County YMCA is a nonprofit organization that administers programs and offers services for the welfare of the local community. The organization coordinates family programs for spiritual, mental and physical development. It offers gymnastic, aquatic and personal training programs. The Newport County YMCA also conducts aerobic and martial arts classes. The organization offers a variety of sports activities, including volleyball, basketball, soccer and baseball. It provides child care, baby-sitting and after-school services, as well as organizes summer and school vacation camps. In addition, the Newport County YMCA sponsors golf tournaments and half marathons. The organization maintains a swimming pool, wellness center and racquetball courts.

Middletown's VFW is the Captain Kenneth L. Gilbert Post 4487.

The center is open daily offering various activities for local veterans and residents. Members are open to a variety of benefits, including help securing government benefits for veterans, subscription to the VFW magazine, group health insurance and more.

Membership is available to all U.S. service members, including those who have earned an overseas campaign or expeditionary medal and are currently on active-duty, in the Reserves or who have been honorably discharged from the U.S. armed forces.

RSVP is a charitable organization, part of East Bay Community Action Program. A volunteer program for people of 55 years and older, RSVP gives volunteers the opportunity to work with children, at elder homes, and at other charities all across Aquidneck Island. Registered RSVP volunteers are offered a wide variety of roles, and are given free supplemental accident insurance as a result of a grant by government. There is no charge to register.

Volunteers who work 50 hours or more are invited to a nice recognition awards dinner, which averages over 300 volunteers each year. RSVP is a wonderful way for people to use their life experiences to help other people. Whether its work at the Red Cross or as a mentor at a school, there are a wide variety of activities. You can volunteer anywhere from once a week to once a year for special events. RSVP is a charitable organization that has something for everyone.

Originally a few shelves at the back of a mid-1800's one-room schoolhouse on Oliphant Lane, today's town library at 700 West Main Rd. can now accomodate a collection of 80,000 items thanks to renovations completed in 2003.

The Middletown Library has also remained true to its early education roots, as it continues to host lectures by world-reknowned authors, financial education seminars and other community classes, as well as enrichment activities like the Toastmasters public speaking club, and teen programs such as summer movies.

For the kids, there are summer reading programs and drop-in storytimes.

Part of the Ocean State Libraries (OSL) network, the Middletown Public Library offers card holders Internet access to search the Library Catalog from any computer onsite. With local roots dating back to 1857, including a 1973 merger between churches in Newport and Middletown, today's Calvary United Methodist Church on Tucker Road serves the needs of Aquidneck Island from a spacious facility where rolling farmland, suburban neighborhoods and coastal breezes meet.

Reverend Lynn M. McCracken is the Pastor who oversees a long and comprehensive list of spiritual programs and services aimed at meeting the needs of the congregation and community. Programs include: Sunday worship; Sunday school classes for ages 3 through adult; Junior Church for children ages 3 to grade 3; prayer breakfast the first Wednesday of the month at 7 am; Wednesday evening Bible Study; Sundaynursery; choir; coffee hour; and more.

Annual events include a holiday bazaar, picnic, Easter breakfast, yard sale and spaghetti dinner and several community outreach programs work independently and partner with other local organizations to assist hospice patients, the homeless, battered women, the hungry and more.

Calvary Christian Pre-School is also located at this facility.

James L. Maher Center is a nonprofit agency that employs nearly 300 people from Middletown and the surrounding communities who have physical and developmental disabilities. A collection of small businesses, Maher Industries was established to generate income to help offset the costs of our educational and residential programs for its employees. Occupying a peninsula between the Sakonnet River and Rhode Island sound, the 242 acre Sachuest Point National Wildlife refuge is a very popular site for the over 65,000 annual visitors each year.

The refuge sports a newly renovated visitor center, over 2.5 miles of nature trails, viewing platforms, and a number of Refuge volunteers present to help visitors and to help in management of the refuge.

Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is renowned for its fantastic saltwater fishing, and the presence of the largest winter population of harlequin ducks on the East Coast.

Once a horse racing area, then a Naval communications site, and now a National Wildlife Refuge, the are is steeped in history. From saltmarsh and beach strand habitats to upland shrub dominated lands, the refuge supports over 200 bird species, with such notable occasional visitors such as the peregrine falcon, northern harrier, and the snowy owl.

Sachuest Point, along with the four other National Wildlife Refuges in the State, are administered by the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex, headquartered in Charlestown, RI. The new Kettle Pond Visitor Center and headquarters located in Charlestown, RI,, celebrates the Sachuest Point Refuge and all of the other refuges in Rhode Island. This facility contains interactive exhibits, displays, a sales area, classrooms for special events, and knowledgeable people where visitors can come and explore the refuges and learn about the wildlife resources and coastal environments of each refuge.

American Red Cross of Middletown responds to every disaster, grants stipends for people burned out of their apartments and gives victims warm and dry clothes and a place to stay. It responds all over RI and as far as Seekonk. It sets up emergency shelters in times of need and is always looking for volunteers. It also works with veterans with ptsd, arranges holiday parties, is the leading trainer for cpr and water safety, teaches safe babysitting and elder care and enables emergency communication for military families overseas.

Central to Middletown and Aquidneck Island, Calvary Baptist Church offers Sunday and Wednesday services, ministry, missionaries and special services to nursing homes and veterans. Pastor Scott Tucker is a graduate of Bob Jones University in South Carolina. Pastor Tucker and his family joined Calvary Baptist Church in 2005. Prior to joining Calvary, he served as Assistant/Youth Pastor at Riverside Baptist Church in Indialantic, Florida.

The Aquidneck Land Trust strives to preserve the open space and natural beauty of Aquidneck Island. The nonprofit was founded in 1990 by local residents and in 1993 secured its first conservation easement.

In the late 1990s, the Aquidneck Land Trust set a goal of conserving 2,000 acres. In October 2008, they reached and surpassed that goal.

The ALT is currently overseen by more than 20 trustees and an advisory board of just as many. A full-time staff also manages operations.

Centrally located in Middletown along tree-lined Forest Avenue, Graceway Community Church, a Christian church, prides itself on being a community made up of parishioners from all walks of life and from different socioeconomic, ethnic and denominational backgrounds.

Sunday morning services at Graceway include Bible Class at 9:30 am and Worship at 10:30. Bible Classes are open to all ages, from preschool to adult, and Sunday services typically feature Bible reading, prayer, communion, music and lessons.

Graceway also offers Connect Groups that include Pathfinders, The Way and Sojourners. Other programs include Prayer Room, Third Watch for teens, and youth activities, as well as ministry services that partner with other local area churches.

Lead Pastor Mike Sullivan, a native of Lawrence, Kansas and raised in North Dakota and California, attended Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas before completing his studies at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. He has served churches from California to Rhode Island for 21 years.
