Located on South Summit Avenue at the entrance to Gaithersburg High School, the Episcopal Church of the Ascension offers area Christians a place to worship and study. The church has a congregation of approximately 500, offers study groups for children, youth and adults, plus community outreach on issues such as hunger, medical needs, education and fair-trade gifting.
The Activity Center at Bohrer Park offers 57,000 square feet of space to do practically anything. Two 8,000 foot gyms are often open for public use, and many camps and after-school programs are held at the Center. There are three 1,000 square foot multipurpose rooms that can be rented and used for special events.
The Historic Chapel at St. Rose of Lima was built in 1883. A few years ago the parish built a much larger and more modern church. The masses are at 5 pm on Saturday and 7:15, 8:45, 11:15 and 1pm (en Espaol) on Sunday. Weekday services are at 8:45 am Monday through Friday.
Grace United Methodist Church is on N. Frederick Avenue. It has Saturday and Sunday masses, as well as Sunday school (for children, teens and adults), Bible study and volunteer groups to help the community. Please check the website for mass schedules and more information.
Located off of 355, this church has services every Sunday and seeks to reach out to children, adults and newcomers through music, bible readings and vacation bible school during the summer. The Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church offers volunteer opportunities that go beyond church walls, with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Prison Ministry, Interfaith Works and So Others Might Eat.
Gaithersburg Church of The Nazarene adheres to a Wesleyan doctrine of the gospel, offering contemporary worship services and an active community outreach program. Roughly 350 members make up the 50-year-old congregation.
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church aims to create a loving and neighborly Christian community for amongst all of its members. It offers services for all ages including "Splash!" for infants up until three, Sunday school for ages 3 and up, confirmation for 7th through 9th graders, and a High School youth program as well. The church and congregation are of average size giving members a more personal feeling.
Goshen United Methodist Church is a predominantly African-American church with more than 500 members, 40 of whom regularly attend its Friday night Sunday school sessions. Office hours are from 8:30am to 4:30pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
The National Christian Choir is a non-profit choir of 150 auditioned singers (ranging in age from eighteen to 70) from the D.C. area. The group, which consists of Christians from multiple denominations, travels locally to perform concerts and typically takes one longer trip per year (visits include Israel, Chicago and Florida). CDs are available for sale.
Seneca Creek State Park offers a variety of trails for mountain biking and hiking, playgrounds and picnic areas for family time and scenic views of Clopper Lake. It extends for 14 miles, following Seneca Creek through Montgomery County to the Potomac River. The 90-acre lake offers fishing and boating, as well. Visitors can explore the area's history on a short self-guided tour, and there is a disc-golf course and hunting within the park.
The Second Chance Wildlife Center rescues and rehabilitates ill, injured and orphaned animals. Its patients include birds, foxes, turtles, snakes, possums, groundhogs, raccoons and many native birds. The Second Chance Wildlife Center is a great place to get a close-up look at some of the native Maryland wildlife.
This quiet park features a garden, paths, benches and a gazebo. It sits on the former site of the Gaithersburg Public Library, which was destroyed by a fire. The site was formerly known as Lee Street Park.
Mother of God Community is a Catholic church and private school in Gaithersburg. The community is canonically recognized within the Archdiocese of Washington and holds a number of events monthly, including special events for women, men and children.
Bethany Presbyterian Church has served Gaithersburg's Korean population for about a decade. It offers regular Sunday services and an English option, as well as activity packets for children. The adjoining building houses a small elementary school that hosts an array of youth programs.
Poplar Grove Baptist Church is a rural community baptist congregation and historical landmark right off Darnestown Road. The original log cabin has hosted services since 1892 and operated as the clergy's main sanctuary until the new site was finished in 1998. According to Reverend James Prather, the church, which offeres regular Sunday services and study groups and prayer meetings on Wednesdays, is the "Holy Ghost headquarters of Gaithersburg."
