Apna Ghar, founded in 1990, is a domestic violence shelter, serving Asian women and children. The organization takes its name from a Hindi and Urdu phrase meaning our home and has served more than 5,000 domestic violence victims since its inception. It is one of the first Asian shelters of its kind in the Midwest and meets the needs of the Asian-American community, including language, religion and family systems. Apna Ghar helps them heal and enhance their sense of dignity and self-respect. Seeking to end domestic violence, Apna Ghar assists its program participants with tools for economic empowerment through various projects, including sewing. Apna Ghar is located in Chicago.
