Southeastern Iowa Synod Evangelical Lutheran is the leader of more than 150 Lutheran churches throughout southeast Iowa. The synod helps guide its member churches to follow one fellowship, direction and vision. It has information on member churches, church programs, missions and more.
Hillel Foundation, also known as Hillel House, is located on the edge of the University of Iowa campus. It offers members of the Jewish faith a positive, friendly place to hang out. Students enjoy a beautiful garden, a Judaic library, a Kosher kitchen and cafeteria, lounges, Internet access and computers. The staff hosts religious services, holiday dinners, lectures and other activities.
All Nations Baptist Church located on Mormon Trek Road is a Korean-based church that welcomes everyone and is focused on family. The church is founded on the same five guiding principles as all Baptist churches: discipleship, worship, empowerment, evangelism and service. The church offers ministries, youth programs, Bible study and services in English and Korean.
The Iowa City Eels Swim Club is a swimming program designed for swimmers of all skill levels. The club provides various programs, including a stroke class, youth and master's programs and elite programs.
Old Brick is a historic landmark and the second oldest building in Iowa City. Built in 1856, it has been designated on the National Register of Historic Places. The building now serves as a community center and houses several non-profit organizations, such as Table to Table, Peace Iowa, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and more. Old Brick also has an auditorium available to rent for meetings, events, lectures and weddings.
The Can Shed is a recycling center that offers redemption of all brands of containers entitled to an Iowa refund. The business accepts walk-in customers and also offers can drives. It is led by Jim Hagen and Troy Willard.
The First Mennonite Church, located on Myrtle Avenue, bases its teachings on the Bible and the inspired Word of God. The church believes in one God existing in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. First Mennonite Church is involved in several ministries, including teaching, elder, Stand Together, children's and fellowship ministries.
Trinity Episcopal Church located on College Street is led by Rev. Mel Schlachter and was founded in August 1868. The church offers an extensive music program featuring Trinity Choir, Advent Festival Choir, Youth Choir, vocalists and instrumentalists, First Sunday Choral Evensong and Second Sunday Jazz Evensong. The church also offers kids, youth and adult religious education as well as several ministry programs.
St Mark's United Methodist Church has been serving the community for more than 30 years. The church offers weekly worship, ministries, outreach programs, and works to help the community. St Mark's also offers youth programs, pancake breakfasts, hymn singing, child care and more.
Kcrg Tv9 located on Clinton Street is a local TV station and an ABC affiliate. It offers five local news programs at 5am, 6am, 11am, 5pm and 10pm. Kcrg Tv9 focuses on stories of interest to residents of Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and the surrounding areas. The Kcrg Tv9 Web site offers recaps and schedules for the day's programming.
The Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center, which serves Kalona, Riverside and Johnson counties, is 400 acres in size and receives approximately 125,000 tons of trash each year. Yard waste, tires, lead acid batteries, appliances and oil are banned from the landfill, but there are recycling programs for disposal of these items. Garbage disposal rates vary according to residency within Johnson County, weight of garbage and type of garbage. The landfill offers tours designed to inform residents on how to reduce waste.
