Operated by the city, the Senior Center is a hub of activity for San Mateo's 50-and-over residents. Built in 1990, the colonial-style structure offers a peaceful, airy and light-filled environment. The city website states, "On any given day at the Senior Center, there can be a dozen things happening from yoga classes to a history seminar, from bingo to billiards or mahjong. We even have chef prepared meals."

The Peninsula Family YMCA is a community center that offers educational, social and recreational programs for families. The center offers low-cost programming and fitness classes that employ a fitness center, a pool, a basketball court, a Pilates studio, a weight room and a child care center. The YMCA offers classes in cycling, pool aerobics, body sculpting, stretching, abs, aerobics, yoga, kick boxing, stepping and more. Special classes are offered to senior citizens as well. 

The YMCA’s youth programs focus on skill building, relationship building, community involvement, safety and participation. The center offers indoor youth sports programs for children ages 3 to 11. Shoreview Recreation Center is a park and community center located on Ocean View Avenue in San Mateo. The center offers a wide range of activities for residents of the community, including sports fields and a skating area.

The park area has a playground for use by children, as well as a baseball diamond, tennis courts, basketball courts and a picnic area. The Shrine Center houses a masonry fraternal organization for men, aiming to give back to the community and support philanthropic efforts. The freemasons arrange blood drives, child safety programs, scholarships and other programs. Several Asiya units meet at the Shrine Center in San Mateo.

Casa Robles is a charming 16-unit apartment building with immaculate landscaping and a beautiful courtyard complete with a fountain. Both the entry at 26 and 28 West 4th Avenue are secured with an intercom system. Residents are less then a block from downtown shopping and an international selection of restaurants.
