Peabody Western Coal Company is one of the largest private-sector coal companies, with sales of nearly 250 million tons and billions of dollars in revenues. At the age of 24, Francis S. Peabody founded the retail coal business in Chicago in 1883. Its first coal mine opened in 1895 in Williamson County, Ill. Peabody has grown from a retail coal business to more than 30 operations in the United States nearly 20 operations throughout the rest of the world. Peabody Western Coal Company maintains headquarters in St. Louis and operates an office in Kayenta, Ariz.
