A city of 23,000 incorporated in 1890 and re-incorporated in 1910, Mauldin operates by a council form of government. The mayor is Don Godbey, whose current term ends in January 2012. There is a six-member council with seats 2, 4 and 6 up for election in 2011 and seats 1,3 and 5 up in 2012.
The city's administrative offices are at 5 East Butler Road. This is also the location for business licensing, the courthouse, the city clerk and other city services. The Police Department also shares the address but uses the rear of the building as the primary entrance.
The Fire Department has its main offices in the same complex but has an address og 11 East Butler Road.
The City of Charleston Recreation Department operates Bees Landing, a 25.66 acre outdoor/indoor recreation complex featuring multiple athletic fields, a playground and gym.
The Town of Lexington Parks, Streets and Sanitation Department is responsible for the planning and maintenance of town-owned parks. It also is responsible for the upkeep, maintenance and construction of town-owned streets. The sanitation division is responsible for maintenance and upkeep of the system, as well as garbage collection within town limits.
Youth sports offered include basketball, co-ed flag football, Dixie league baseball and softball, T-ball, cheer leading, football, soccer, volleyball and wrestling. Registration fees are $30 for Hanahan residents and $50 for non-residents.
The city also offers adult sports programs, including softball, volleyball and basketball.
Hanahan also has summer programs for students, a very active senior center and regular musical events at the large park.
At the Railroad Avenue site, there are seven baseball/softball fields, along with a full size soccer field. The gymnasium nearby has two basketball courts.
A large expansion of the park site includes paved walking trails and plans for an amphitheater and additional boat access.
