New York City/Off-Track Betting Corp (NYC OTB) operates as a public-benefit corporation, a governmental entity run along the lines of a private enterprise whose profits accrue back to the taxpayers in the form of public revenue. Based in New York City, N.Y., the corporation raises revenue for the city and state and combats organized crimes hold on gambling by providing a legal alternative and assists New York States racing industry. The corporation opened in 1971 with two branch offices and a telephone-betting center and had an opening day handle of $66,091. NYC OTB was the first legal off-track pari-mutuel wagering operation in the country. NYC OTB operates 65 branch locations and 13 restaurants throughout the city. As a result of the increased interest in in-home wagering, broadcasting began in 1997 on the first NYC OTB produced television show, the NYC OTB Racing Network was established in 2000. The Network provides viewers with a front row seat to view the races and informational programming to increase their knowledge of the sport.
