The Scott County Library System is a network of community libraries. The Shakopee branch provides online reference materials, summer reading programs, audiocassettes, books, books on cassette and CD, compact discs, e-book readers, magazines, newspapers, toys, videocassettes and DVDs.
The public works department controls all the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of all city streets and sanitary sewer and storm drainage systems.
Other duties include taking care of city parks and equipment. There are six divisions of the department: engineering (located next door at 500 Gorman St.), streets, fleet maintenance, park maintenance, sanitary sewer. and storm drainage utilities.
The Minnesota Correctional Facility-Shakopee, 1010 West Sixth Avenue, Shakopee, Minnesota 55379, opened in 1986, houses adult women offenders committed to the commissioner of corrections. Population is approximately 565, and includes all custody levels. The facility has 11 buildings including a core building for administration and offender activities, a segregation unit, seven living units, an industry/vocational educational building, and a heating plant.
MINNCOR Industries provides part or full-time work for the offender population, and many inmates also work on institution maintenance crews and in food service.
Offenders have access to a variety of academic and vocational educational opportunities. Mental health and treatment services are also available.
The Shakopee Community Center is a local gathering spot equipped with a variety of fitness equipment, a gym, a walking track and meeting space. It is also houses the Shakopee Ice Arena, Enigma Teen Center and the Shakopee Skate Park. The Community Center, Rotary Room, Studio Room and gym are available for rent by calling the city. Annual and monthly memberships are available; non-members pay daily user fees.
The city offices house the departments of administration, planning and zoning and building inspections. Residents can stop by during office hours with questions or concerns. The city council meets regularly on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7pm in the Council Chambers. Daily operation of the city is performed by departments under the supervision of the city administrator. City services are provided by a staff of about 115 full-time, 100 part-time and more than 300 seasonal employees.
