The Village of Dexter's Department of Public Works is responsible for a wide variety of activities within the village, including maintenance of streets and roads, maintenance and operation of drainage facilities, sewer collection lines, maintenance and operation of sewer treatment facilities, coordination of environmental activities and traffic control engineering. Copeland Administration Building is the primary administrative office for the Dexter Community Schools. It houses the superintendant's offices, the district's business offices and various other department offices.
Webster Township Hall is home to the township Board of Trustees, Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Commission. It is also a substation for the Dexter Fire Department. The township hall is available for local residents to rent for private parties. A $50 deposit and $150 rental fee are required.
The township board meets the third Tuesday of every month at 7:30pm.
The Planning Commission meets the third Wednesday of every month at 7pm.
The Zoning Board of Appeals meets the second Tuesday of the month on an as-needed basis.
The Lima Township is home to the Lima Township Board of Trustees as well as various meetings of boards and commissions. The supervisor is Kenneth B. Unterbrink, clerk is Arlene R. Bareis, treasurer is Nanette Havens. The trustees are Donald A. Laier and Gregory McKenzie.
The Zoning Administration meets from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday and Thursday. The Tax Assessor meets from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday .
Dexter Township was founded in 1833 as part of a settlement near the Huron River. As of the 2000 census, there were 5,248 people, 1,863 households and 1,488 families residing in the township. It is governed by the Dexter Township Board of Trustees; the current Township Supervisor is Pat Kelly.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department serves the Village of Dexter's law enforcement and public safety needs. Since the village does not have its own police department, it has a contract with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department. The Washtenaw County Sheriff's substation is located in the same building as the Dexter Area Fire Department, and it serves the village and surrounding townships.
There are nine deputies, including one school liaison; four deputies patrolling the three municipalities; "COPS" (community oriented police) working in conjunction with the individual municipalities on special problems, crime prevention and other local law enforcement activities; and one sergeant.
