The five-member Board of Selectmen meets on the second and fourth Friday of each month at the town offices. Its powers including appointing the Town Administrator, Police Chief, Fire Chief and Town Accountant. The selectmen also hear issues on alcohol licenses, entertainment, code enforcements and resident disputes.
The collector's office manages and disperses the funds of the town, handling such finances as abatements, real estate taxes, excise taxes and municipal liens.
A public agency, the Housing Authority is appointed by the Northborough Board of Selectmen. It assists those with low income, the elderly and handicapped by providing housing. It is regulated by Commonwealth of Massachusetts through the Department of Housing and Community Development.
Appointed by the Northborough Board of Selectmen, Town Administrator John W. Coderre is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the town's municipal government. As he explains to the building's many tour groups - such as the local Boy Scouts - he compares himself to "the coach of a baseball team," overseeing the other town departments, many of which are also located within the Town Hall. The Town Administrator also works closely with the Board of Selectmen.
Northborough Highway Department is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the highways in Northborough. The Highway Garage is also used as a location for residents to drop off leaves, grass and brush, as well as Christmas trees during the holiday season.
Since '91, Friends of the Northborough Senior Center has had a large bevy of volunteers helping to support the efforts of the staff at the Center. The Friends help raise funds for programs, services and emergency aid.
According to its listing on the town website, the Board of Health is dedicated to keeping the Town of Northborough a healthy and environmentally safe place to live. We strive to do this through the development and implementation of programs that seek to prevent the outbreak of infectious diseases and by controlling environmental health hazards. Through the enforcement of State statutes and regulations regarding on-site sewerage treatment and disposal systems (Title V), restaurant sanitation and tobacco control we further endeavor to protect, preserve and improve the health of our citizens.
The Board of Health meets the second Tuesday of each month.
