The Monterey Regional Waste Management District provides integrated waste management services to California s Monterey Peninsula. The district covers more than 850 square miles and serves approximately 170,000 people. Its mission is to preserving the environment and protecting public health through the reduction, reuse, recycling and safe disposal of the area s wastestream. Its facilities are located on a 475-acre property two miles north of Marina, Calif. The property consists of a sanitary landfill site, a buffer area, administration building, scalehouse, resale facility, maintenance buildings, landfill gas power project, materials recovery facility and household hazardous waste facility. In recent years, the district s role has expanded to include the recovery of recyclable materials, including cardboard, paper, glass, wood, yardwaste, plastics, metals, sheetrock, concrete, asphalt, reusable building materials and resale items. The first landfill gas-to-electrical energy system in central California was installed at the site in 1983 and is generating more than 4,000 kilowatts of continuous power.
