Books and Boxing is a 501C non-profit boxing gym promoting education and self-esteem through physical activity and mentorship for at-risk youth. To be a part of the program, students must maintain a passing average grade in exchange for boxing and kickboxing training. There are competitive and non-competitive training programs.
The classes include morning boot camp, open boxing and after school sessions for middle and high school students. Adult fitness boxing classes are also offered.
American Legion Post 86 is the Rockville post of the American Legion, a non-profit verteran's organization. The organization exists to support veterans and those active in the military, as well as its community. This post hosts a variety of events and programs throughout the year to give back to the community and to those who serve, or have served, our country.
The Arc of Montgomery County is one of many Arc organization offices that provides programs for individuals, families and employers affected by persons with developmental challenges. The Arc was founded in 1958 in order to provide extensive resources for these challenges. Programs include educational, residential, vocational and other support services for people of all ages. Volunteers are welcome, and the Arc welcomes both donations and customers at its thrift store.
The Fisher House program is a private-public partnership that is dedicated to supporting America's military. The Fisher House Foundation donates "comfort homes," on military bases and VA medical centers for the many members of the military and their families who are stationed worldwide and often must often travel for specialized medical care. The comfort homes allow family members to be close to a loved one during hospitalization for illness, disease or injury without incurring any lodging expense. There is at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center and more than 12,000 families are assisted each year. The Fisher House Foundation also provides scholarships for military children and co-sponsors the Newman's Own Award.
Community Ministries of Rockville is a charitable organization working to improve the lives of those in need in the community. It provides shelter, jobs and advocacy for the homeless, home assistance for elderly citizens, English lessons for immigrants and health services for the uninsured.
Montgomery County Coalition for The Homeless provides permanent and transitional housing, emergency shelter and support services. Other priorities include coordinating advocacy, program and educational efforts. This includes spearheading an effort to end homelessness in the county.
MCCH programs seek to help chronically homeless adults and formerly homeless individuals and families settle into housing. This includes transitional and permanent housing. Safe havens, care and treatment for the mentally ill are also part of the mission
The MCCH is a community-based nonprofit organization started in the 1980s with an informal network of shelters, soup kitchens, government officials and church congregations. The effort was officially incorporated in 1990. It's funded by government contracts and private donations.
Transportation Communications International Union is a 46,000 member union that is in the process of merging with the International Association of Machinists.
Originally, the union was the Order of Railroad Clerks of America, founded in 1899 with 33 members. Over the decades its name evolved as the membership grew to include more railroad workers. It adopted the current TCIU name in 1987.
The Machinists merger is expected to be finalized in 2012.
Starting in 1958 the Arc of Montgomery County has been providing services for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Its focus is vocational placement, family support and child care for infants with severe medical conditions.
Peerless Rockville works to preserve local history found in buildings, objects, writings and records. Its tools are education, example, advocacy and community involvement. It represents this commitment with the organization's office built it 1891, the old court house.
The organization has worked to preserve local historic landmarks such as the B&O Railroad Station, Red Brick Courthouse and Wire Hardware. It also helps residents and property owners research their property and get historic preservation status when possible. This is possible with their archives with more than 4,000 photographs, verbal histories and research materials.
The non-profit organization gets its name from a 1890 real estate promotional booklet to get people to move to the then-new Rockville subdivision of West End Park.
