John Muir/Mt. Diablo Community Health Fund receives $1 million each year from John Muir Health. It provides grants to fund community-based programs and initiatives for under-served and vulnerable individuals and families without medical insurance. The grants help them gain access to health care, mental health services, dental care and related support services offered by nonprofit organizations and public agencies. The facility is located in the San Marcos Offices building.
Founded in 2007 by Karin Wagner, the nonprofit Neigh Savers Foundation seeks to provide second careers or peaceful retirements to California's former thoroughbred racehorses. Working with horse owners, trainers and racetracks, the foundation looks to ensure peaceful lives for horses that have retired due to age, illness or lack of success. Neigh Savers also aims to increase awareness both within the racing world and the general public about humane animal treatment and the possibility of second chances. Neigh Savers provides temporary horse shelter and foster care, and horse adoption services and hosts local fundraising and educational events.
Founded in 1941 by Jim Rayburn, a Presbyterian seminarian, the nonprofit Young Life Development is a Christian ministry that seeks to support the growth and development of youth in a Christian environment. Young Life reaches out to middle school, high school and college kids across the United States as well as in 60 countries worldwide. The organization focuses on connecting caring adults with adolescents in order to introduce them to Christianity and help them grow in their faith. Young Life programs include camping excursions, hosting local club meetings, leadership campaigns and contact work with youth. The Diablo Valley Young Life Headquarters is located in Walnut Creek and hosts weekly meetings for its volunteers and participants.
