The Chicago Board of Education, founded in 1840, is responsible for the governance, organizational and financial oversight of Chicago Public Schools, which is one of the largest school districts in the United States. The board establishes policies, standards, goals and initiatives to ensure accountability and provide a high quality education for students. It has received the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) awards for fiscal year 2008 budget publication and 2007 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), as well as the most Golden Apple awards since 1996. The board introduced CPS Graduation Pathways, a dropout prevention strategy, comprised of the Youth Engaged in School (YES) Initiative, Freshman Connection, and Freshmen On-Track Labs. The Chicago Board of Education also officially launched the CPS Office of Arts Education with Arts on the Agenda symposium.
