The first community center in Gaithersburg, Casey was a gift to the city in the 1970s. Now one of many, it is mostly rented out for religious, birthday or other meetings. Many classes, geared both toward children and adults, are held in the classrooms, computer lab and dance studio.
The Kentlands Mansion, a country estate in the heart of the Kentlands community and across from the Arts Barn, offers an upscale rental facility for weddings, birthdays and many other events. It features several ornate rooms, a covered porch and a caterers kitchen. Beautifully landscaped grounds often serve as the backdrop for prom and wedding photos.
Bohrer Park has a little something for everyone. In addition to trails, fields, ponds, playgrounds, pavilions, volleyball nets and a horseshoe pit, the park includes the Gaithersburg Activity Center. The activity center features mini-golf, a skate park and a water park. This is a great place to bring the family or a large group for a party or a relaxing afternoon spent poolside.
Perched above Rio Lake, the centerpiece of the Rio Center, Joe's Crab Shack offers a fun and friendly atmosphere to dine on the crustaceans for which the restaurant is named as well as to enjoy a wealth of appetizers, from traditional mozzerella sticks to calamari. The restaurant's full menu includes salads, sides, sandwiches, steaks, a variety of fish and Joe's featured crab cakes. Big sampler platters offer patrons a great way to taste many of Joe's delicacies.
The outdoor seating offers a panorama of the lake, which is often filled with geese and paddleboat riders—be sure to enjoy a frozen drink while you enjoy the view!
The Gaithersburg Arts Barn houses several rotating art exhibits and the studios of two resident artists. A 99-seat stage on the second floor is home to productions by several theatre companies throughout the year. Classes are held by the artists weekly. The original structure was built in 1900 and underwent a multi-million dollar renovation in 2003.
