The Center of Marine Biotechnology is a research laboratory devoted to the study, protection and enhancement of marine and estuarine resources. The center provides basic research of molecular biology and molecular genetics of marine and estuarine shellfish and finfish, harmful algae, environmental pollution and bioremediation, and microbial processes and products. This research is used in aquaculture and fisheries production and the development of technologies for the detection of harmful algae and other toxins. It is also used to develop novel approaches for environmental cleanup and restoration and new, marine-based compounds and microbial products. In addition, the center works to develop and disseminate educational and outreach programs used by educational institutions. The center is a research component of the Columbus Center, a hub for marine biotechnology, research and education. The Center of Marine Biotechnology employs more than 140 faculty and staff. The center is located in Baltimore.
