The Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, also known as SFBR, is one of the leading independent biomedical research institutions in the world. The foundation s facility covers an area of more than 330 acres. Formerly known as the Foundation of Applied Research, it collaborates with various researchers and institutions across the world. The foundation conducts research on a range of issues related to obesity, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and psychiatric disorders. The Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research also conducts research on diseases, such as malaria, hepatitis and parasitic infections. Founded in 1941, it employs a staff of over 400 individuals. The foundation is a nonprofit institution that is registered with the Department of Agriculture and is accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC). The Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research features a laboratory and the Southwest National Primate Research Center.
