Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts at the Brooklyln Campus of Long Island University manages to provide an intimate space despite its large scale. The Invisible Dog is an interdisciplinary arts center founded in 2009 to present visual art exhibits, dance, theatre, music, film and poetry in an eclectic, community-based environment. The center rents studio space to artists on the second and third floors of its converted factory building.
Formerly the Majestic, this theater was abandoned in 1968 and purchased by Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in 1987. Originally a playhouse then a movie theater, BAM renovated it, retaining much of the well-worn interior, lending it an atmosphere that harks back to the theaters of old. Theater productions are held here in the 874-seat auditorium, and the space is available for rental.
The masonic temple is a unique music venue in Brooklyn with good acoustics and a memorable atmosphere. Many popular acts have performed there, including the Walkmen, Mastodon and Godspeed You Black Emperor!
The Gallery Players theater has been staging classic and contemporary plays and musicals since 1967. The 99-seat theater is located in a basement-level space in Park Slope. Patrons are advised to arrive at least 10 minutes before curtain. Tickets can be purchased in advance; any remaining tickets are available for purchase at the door with cash only.
Trilok Fusion Center for Arts & Education is a nonprofit organization which endeavors to provide its community with a cultural and artistic facility. Offering summer and after-school programs for children, including Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance, music, cooking, language classes, photography, yoga, art, theater and more, Trilok Fusion Center additionally provides studio rental space for workshops, events and parties, and is home to a preschool which caters to students ages 2 to 5.
BAMCafe is operated by Great Performances, the catering and food service at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The cafe is open before and after the day's performance. The eclectic menu features such delicacies as pumpkin risotto, sea scallops and steaks. Patrons are welcome to imbibe from the many choices of domestic and imported wines and cocktails.
In the front section of Barbès, microbrews, single malt scotches and cocktails made from obscure liqueurs are served in an old-fashioned, tile-floored barroom. In the back room, an intimate venue hosts live music ranging from Mexican brass bands to Gypsy swing to opera. Author readings and film screenings are sometimes featured, as well.
Cobble Hill Cinema, originally the Rio Theatre, is a Brooklyn icon. The cinema has undergone a variety of changes since the 1960s. Originally showing Kung Fu and action films, Cobble Hill Cinema now screens a wide range of film genres. You'll find independent and foreign films, along with popular children's movies and Hollywood blockbusters.
The interior of the theatre retains its classic style. It features matinees with lower ticket prices as well as on "Bargain Tuesdays and Thursdays," when tickets are only $7.
