The National Park Service is responsible for maintaining a network of more than 350 natural, cultural and recreational sites throughout the United States. The department preserves and maintains sites, such as Gettysburg and the Grand Canyon and Statue of Liberty. It is responsible for maintaining other sites, including Rosie the Riveter, Boston Harbor Islands and Russell Cave. The National Park Service also helps communities to preserve and enhance important local heritage and close-to-home recreational locations throughout the U.S. It also provides grants and assistance to create community parks and local recreation facilities; conserve rivers and streams; develop trails and greenways; and register, record and save historic places. The National Park Service is administered by the Department of the Interior.
