National Institutes of Health is a federal medical research center located in Bethesda. The facility, which is under the umbrella of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, employs more than 18,000 individuals on its Bethesda campus and is made up of 27 different institutes and centers. NIH supports medical researchfor a variety of diseases and disorders. Its campus also encompasses the National Library of Medicine and the Children's Inn at NIH, a nonprofit home for families of sick children taking part in research trials at the institute.
