An Alameda institution since 1949, when it was founded as the Alameda Boys Club by local businessmanLeonard E. Lee, the Club began to incorporate girls into programing in the 1980s and officially became the Alameda Boys & Girls Club in 1991. Operating in partnership with many other community groups, the Alameda Boys & Girls Club aims to "inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential," providing them with recreational and educational opportunities in a safe and welcoming setting. In 2006, the Club began a capital campaign to replace the organization's Lincoln Avenue building, and in 2010 it broke ground at a 1.5-acre site. The new west end facility will includea gym, teen center, game room, computer lab, learning center, music and dance areas, a dental clinic and a health clinic.
